Summarize Written Text is one of the most scoring tasks in PTE Academic. It tests your ability to understand an academic passage and express the main idea clearly in a single, well-structured sentence. Although the task looks simple, many students lose marks due to poor structure, grammar errors, or missing key points.
In this article, we will explain the task, outline the assessment criteria, and share effective strategies to help you secure a high score.
In PTE Academic, Summarize Written Text appears in the Writing section.
Your response must summarise the main idea of the entire passage, not just one paragraph.
After 7 August 2025, writing tasks in PTE follow a hybrid scoring model (AI + Human review). However, Summarize Written Text is still largely evaluated through automated systems, with quality monitoring to ensure fairness.
✔ Content (main idea coverage)
✔ Form (one single sentence, 5–75 words)
✔ Grammar
✔ Vocabulary
✔ Spelling
This means both meaning and language accuracy are important.

Follow this smart approach:
Step 1: Read Actively (2–3 minutes)
Step 2: Identify Key Points
Step 3: Write One Complex Sentence
Step 4: Proofread (1–2 minutes)
Many students lose easy marks due to:
❌ Writing more than one sentence
❌ Exceeding 75 words
❌ Copying full sentences from the passage
❌ Missing the main idea
❌ Grammar errors in long sentences
Remember: A grammatically incorrect long sentence can reduce multiple scoring areas.
✔ Aim for 30–45 words (safe range)
✔ Use conjunctions instead of full stops
✔ Focus on meaning, not decoration
✔ Practice writing complex but clear sentences
✔ Improve grammar accuracy
Clarity and control matter more than fancy vocabulary.
Summarize Written Text in PTE Academic is not about rewriting the passage. It is about demonstrating your ability to identify the main idea and present it clearly in one well-constructed sentence. By understanding the scoring criteria and practising structured summaries, you can significantly improve your writing score.
With consistent practice and smart technique, this task can become one of your strongest scoring areas.
